We so appreciate all of you and decided Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to thank the hundreds and hundreds of community members who have supported UIDN with their time and money during the last year. The history of Valentine’s Day is somewhat mysterious. It differs from country to country, age to age. Here are a few examples of its history and practice that seem particularly suited to UIDN’s mission.
Helping the oppressed. Some believe the day stems from Saint Valentine of Rome who ministered to Christians and others imprisoned and persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century. In Slovenia, Saint Valentine is the patron of pilgrims, beekeepers, spring, and good health.
Treating friends. In some Latin American countries it’s common for people to perform acts of appreciation for friends on Valentine’s Day. In others, there are amigos secretos or secret friends, similar to secret Santa in the U.S. In Guatemala, Valentine’s Day is sometimes known as Día del Cariño, affection day.
So, thank you all for your support of pilgrims and the persecuted! And, know that you have our affection and appreciation, today and every day.
