Biking

If you need a bike to get to work, school, appointments, or errands, the YMCA can help. Complete a form (English, Spanish), and as bikes are donated and fixed, they will contact you with just the right one. A donation of $20 is requested when you pick up the bike.

If an old bike is cluttering up your garage, the YMCA happily accepts adult bikes and recycles them. Your bike will make a difference in the life of a member of our community. Bikes may be sold to support the program. Bike donation guidelines.

Free bike repair clinics are held March through November by the Y and Bike Friendly Kingston. Volunteer mechanics diagnose, and if possible, repair bikes. No advance registration is needed. The events are free, but donations are welcome! You must bring your bike. Check our events page for dates.

Driving

Just before the pandemic hit, New York’s Green Light legislation made many more immigrants eligible to apply for drivers’ licenses and learners’ permits. Green Light NY,  Worker Justice Center New York (WJCNY), and Ulster Immigrant Defense Network have created a five-part virtual workshop and a study guide to help people prepare for the  written test. The videos and material are in Spanish. Get details in English or Spanish.

Applicants for a standard driver license must show documents that prove name, date of birth, and address in New York. The State Department of Motor Vehicles website lists acceptable documents and explains how to apply for a license. The site is available in many languages including Spanish and English.
