Building on the successful effort to halt a proposed ICE detention facility in Chester, our friends in Orange County challenged their county executive to end the county’s long-standing contract with ICE and to stop holding detainees at the county jail.

Shelby Aho, a lifelong Newburgh resident and an organizer with For the Many, was quoted as follows, “We all want our homes to be safe. And the reality is, the presence of ICE makes our homes dangerous.” Her remarks framed a throughline that ran across the afternoon: that local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement increases the likelihood of raids, arrests, and deportations in surrounding communities.”

The demonstration was organized by For the Many, NY Dignity Not Detention, Proyecto Faro, Fuerza Newburgh, Rural & Migrant Ministry, Newburgh Resists, Citizen Action of New York, mid- and lower-Hudson chapters of Democratic Socialists of America, and the Rockland Coalition to End the New Jim Crow.
