This session is open to staff and volunteers of New York-based not-for-profits, but presumes a basic understanding of immigration law. It will describe the basic principles of bond requests at Immigration Court including mandatory detentions, new arguments made by the Dept. of Homeland Security, typical case patterns, issue spotting, helpful evidence to collect, how to build a persuasive bond argument. The training will be led by Iris Ramos, Law Office of Iris Ramos PLLC.
Sample situations: a client calls and tells you they’re detained. A client says their friend was picked up by ICE. How can you help? What evidence do you gather? What do you argue? What arguments can you expect the Dept. of Homeland Security to make? Should you even take this case? How do you prepare for the hearing?
Registration will close on September 28, 5pm. REGISTER HERE. Free for New York-based not-for-profits; private attorneys, $50; government employees, $40. In case of economic hardship, a fee reduction or waiver may be available upon request. Please email training@nyic.org for a financial aid request form.
