Six Wednesdays: April 9, 23, & 30 and May 7, 14, & 21 | 4:00-6:30 pm, SUNY New Paltz, Old Main Building | 15 CTLE* | No fee
Hudson Valley Writing Project (HVWP) and the Mid-Hudson Teacher Center (MHTC) offer a professional development series designed for kindergarten to grade 12 teachers in all subject areas. In six sessions, experienced teachers will share powerful practices for teaching multilingual learners (MLLs) that help students to develop new skills and confidence to express their ideas in speaking and writing.
Each meeting will include an experiential workshop introducing literacy strategies that engage students and offer particular support to MLLs. Presenters will share culturally relevant practices and strength-based approaches they use in their own classrooms. Participants also will examine and discuss samples of student work and time will be provided to plan how to incorporate new practices into your classrooms.
HVWP facilitator Sarah Wheeler will open and close each meeting, linking the sessions together by offering readings and short prompts for writing and discussion to guide us as we reflect on and integrate our experiences, developing new understanding together.
*HVWP and MHTC are NYSED-approved sponsors of CTLE. This workshop satisfies the requirement for professional development addressing the needs of English language learners. Participants may document 15 CTLE hours.
