SUMMARY:Immigration in Early Childhood Education
DESCRIPTION:This free virtual course — to be held on three Thursdays in February — aims to equip educators in PreK-2nd grade settings with tools and knowledge to better support our immigrant students and immigrant families. The module will encourage educators to examine their own stances and assumptions about immigration and adopt a strengths-based approach to working with students. Registration closes 11:59pm\, Monday\, January 26. \nGrounded in the idea that our youngest students deserve meaningful instruction that centers their immigrant-origin identities\, the course will offer strategies for creating welcoming and nurturing learning environments. Participants will explore a variety of readings\, videos\, and resources. All early childhood educators are encouraged to apply: teachers\, social workers\, paraprofessionals\, school leaders\, and others are welcome. \nInstructor: Kellie Griffith Tanaka\, CUNY-IIE Project Researcher. Dates: 6-8:30pm on three Thursdays\, February 5\, February 12\, and February 26. Participants who attend all sessions and complete an additional 6.5 hours of asynchronous group and independent work will earn 15 Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits.

SUMMARY:Financial Support for Sponsored Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:Financial Support Sponsored Immigrants May Not Know They Qualify For: Understanding the USCIS Form I-864 Affidavit of Support in Family-Sponsored Cases \nSponsored immigrants may be entitled to meaningful financial support—but advocates often don’t realize it. In this session\, advocates and nonprofit service providers will  learn about Form I-864\, Affidavit of Support\, which can be used to secure ongoing financial assistance for sponsored immigrants struggling to meet basic needs. \nDrawing on real cases and practical examples\, the presentation explains who qualifies\, when the obligation is enforceable\, and how advocates can spot viable cases and connect clients with legal help. The goal is to equip frontline organizations with a concrete\, underused tool to improve financial stability and outcomes for the communities they serve. \nThe training will be led by Greg McLawsen. He represents low-income immigrants in state and federal lawsuits to enforce the USCIS Form I-864\, Affidavit of Support. Greg has published numerous law journal articles on this topic and routinely presents to lawyers and advocacy organizations around the country. \nRegistration will close February 23\, 1pm.

SUMMARY:Basics of Bond Practice at Immigration Court
DESCRIPTION:Someone calls to tell you they’ve been detained or that a friend was picked up by ICE. \n  \nHow can you help? What evidence do you gather? What do you argue? What arguments can you expect DHS to make? Should you even take this case? How do you prepare for the hearing? \nThis training will focus on describing the basic principles of bond requests with Immigration Court ranging from mandatory detentions to new arguments DHS is making against bonds to helpful evidence to how to best present your bond in Court. Walk through case patterns\, discuss issue spotting\, and identify evidence gathering to build a persuasive bond argument. \nThis training presumes a basic understanding of immigration law. It will be led by Iris Ramos of The Law Office of Iris Ramos PLLC. Registration will close on February 24 at 5pm. New York-based nonprofit organization staff and volunteers register FREE thanks to the NYS Office of New Americans.
