SUMMARY:Program for educators
DESCRIPTION:This course\, free and open to educators throughout New York State\, will explore the complexities of immigration and give participants time to reflect on existing practices and identify ways to strengthen supports for immigrant students and families. Participants will explore ways to create a safe and welcoming environment\, and to support immigrant students academically\, linguistically and socio-emotionally. Registration closes May 1. \nOn three consecutive Thursdays there will be hands-on opportunities to learn about historical and current immigration events and policies and their impact on schools. The module includes a 1-hour assignment prior to the start of the course (found at the end of this registration form)\, 7.5 mandatory hours of synchronous sessions\, and an additional 6.5 hours of asynchronous small group and independent work. \nInstructor: Aminata Diop\, Ph.D. is chief of staff and director of administrative services at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine. She holds a Ph.D. in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her research addresses the culture\, language\, and social identity of immigrant youth. \nHer dissertation focused on immigrant students from African descent\, transnational mothering\, and integration experiences of transnationalized children to illuminate how the increase of the immigrant population in the U.S. complicates dominant ideologies of nationalism and mainstream perceptions of normal family structures. \n

SUMMARY:Rally for Immigrant Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join New York for All and Dignity not Detention to demand that the NY State Legislature pass two bills to help protect and defend immigrant New Yorkers. The Interfaith Center of NY writes that attacks against immigrant communities are escalating by the day and points to the need for this legislation to help protect our neighbors. \nThe New York for All Act will prohibit local and state agencies from colluding with ICE and the Dignity not Detention Act will prevent local jails from contracting with ICE to increase detention capacity. \nDownload flyer. More questions? Email Linda Flor (linda@immdefense.org)\, NY4All Coalition\, or Rosa  (rosac@bronxdefenders.org)\, Dignity not Detention.

SUMMARY:Program for educators
DESCRIPTION:This course\, free and open to educators throughout New York State\, will help educators explore and identify what advocacy can look like in schools and classrooms\, learn ways to help immigrant access college and career resources\, and understand how to empower immigrant youth in and out of school. Registration closes May 1. \nThe class will meet three consecutive Tuesdays and includes a 1-hour assignment prior to the start of the course (found at the end of this registration form)\, 7.5 mandatory hours of synchronous sessions\, and an additional 6.5 hours of asynchronous small group and independent work. \nIn a political climate that threatens immigrant communities\, this course will provide opportunities for secondary educators to discuss key issues and find ways to connect with community members in order to identify the concrete actions they can take to support students and families. \nInstructor: Sunisa Nuonsy is a graduate of  public schools and has been teaching 11th and 12th grade English Language Arts at the International High School in Brooklyn for nine years. She is also an ambassador with CUNY’s Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals. \nBorn in a refugee camp in Thailand to Lao parents\, she and her family were resettled in upstate New York following the Vietnam War just after she turned one. Her interest in language\, particularly “translanguaging” and home languages\, has led her to the Graduate Center at CUNY\, where she hopes to contribute years of progressive\, critical\, and transformative educational experiences to the project.
